Q & A: Basement Blocks turning Dark

Question:  I have a block basement.  I have noticed this spring that some of the blocks on the top few rows turning a darker color after a substantial rain.  Is this water leaking through?  I have no ‘color change’ on the lower blocks or on any other walls.  I do not have water on the floor either.  Is there something I can do before calling in help?

Answer:  Thanks Ann & Bob for the great question.  Water definitely can be a home’s worse nightmare if it gets into the foundation, so I’m glad you asked. It sounds like the beginning stages of water leaking thru the blocks, which will eventually cause block deterioration and water entering into the basement.  First, check to make sure the gutters are not leaking and downspouts are extended away from the foundation.  If gutter system is not the cause, you may want to coat the exterior block.  Buy a concrete/masonary water-proofer and some drainboard membrane.  Dig down along your exterior basement wall one foot below the apparent leak and apply the coating.   Follow instructions for applying membrane over the waterproofer coating.  Allow to dry and repeat as instructions indicate.  Once coating has cured you can fill the dirt back in.  I hope this was helpful and I wish you and your home the best.

While it’s not everyday we get a phone call from a satisfied customer, we are extremely proud when it happens. Our Service Coordinator, Cheri, received a phone call from a Mr. Ellis regarding his most recent service. Below is the email she sent out to the company on his behalf.

Yesterday morning (4/16/12) Mr. Ellis called in and said that his pump was running all the time. He thought something was wrong with the float switch and wanted to make sure that it was working before we got more heavy rain.

I called Ryan and he worked Mr. Ellis into his schedule yesterday, had the wrong pump on his truck, drove all the way back to the shop from Anderson, picked up a new pump and returned to the customer. Ryan collected the amount for the new pump and continued on with this day.

When I called Mr. Ellis to verify satisfaction, he said he has never seen a company that had such supreme customer service. He said he “felt like he was our only customer” because we gave him such immediate attention. He also said that “Ryan was very informative and knowledgeable and explained why he needed a new pump.”

We were even more excited when he told me “Unique Home Solutions is on top of his list of great companies!”

As a locally owned and operated company, we would like nothing more than to announce that we have installed each and every job flawlessly. It is likely most home remodelers wish the same. Why you need a Roofing Inspection
